Radiocast: Peanut Safety
Debra: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health. The list of
recently recalled peanut products connected to an outbreak of salmonella has
retailers and consumers concerned about the safety of their food supplies.
Products made with peanuts processed at the Peanut Corporation of America’s
plant in Blakely, Georgia have resulted in illness and death from salmonella
bacteria.
Stephen Sundlof, Director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at
the Food and Drug Administration has more:
Sundlof: If you don’t know the source of the food that contains peanuts,
don’t eat it - just don’t eat it - until you can find out better information.
Debra: The information can be found at
fda.gov for a list of product
recalls. Mr. Sundlof says if you have doubts about a product that isn’t on the
recall list, put the product aside and check with the manufacturer. He also says
national brand peanut butter bought at supermarkets is safe.
