Audio PSA: Preventing Blood Clots

Mary: Paul, honey, how are you feeling today?

Paul: [sounding tired] A bit tired.

Mary: It’s normal after your surgery. Remember, the doctor said we need to be careful so you don't get a blood clot in your legs.

Paul: I know. The doctor said a clot could cause a stroke or other problems. I’m doing my exercises, wearing loose clothes and these special socks the doctor prescribed for me.

Mary: That’s right. And if you have any swelling or pain in your leg, we’ll call the doctor immediately. Now let me help you raise your leg up to help with your blood flow.

Paul: Thanks, sweetheart. And after lunch, let’s take a walk.

Narrator: Blood clots are serious so it’s important to know the signs and get treated right away. And you’re at higher risk for a clot if you’ve recently had surgery or a stroke, or if you have difficulty walking. For your free copy of a guide to prevent blood clots call 1-800-358-9295. Again, 1-800-358-9295. A message from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
